Improving Your Study Skills

Below are some methods you might consider using to help improve your study skills.
(You are not limited to these! Think of your own, or modify these!)

Find what works for you and use it!

Write down important content on index cards. For example: words & definitions, ideas or descriptions, math equations or computations and things that have a particular sequence. Then use these cards to study. Use your SCIENCE VOCABULARY NOTEBOOK!

Use the SQ3R system of reading and retaining content material. Click HERE to learn more about it.

Outline material that we studied in class, or that we will study the next day. Click HERE for directions on how to outline out of a text book.

Use the study guides Mrs. Malkowski has made for each chapter! Ask someone to quiz you each night not just the night before a test.

Pay attention the day we play Jeopordy. Listen to the questions & answers. This is a review for the test.

T- sheet with basic concepts on the left and information on the right. When you study you can cover up one side and test what you know.

Get yourself ORGANIZED. Your locker also falls under this category!

Use a highlighter on your study guides and write in the margins. Try using color for different meanings.

Rewrite your study guide or copy the chapter summary found at the end of each chapter.

Read your study guides out loud. When you are studying for a test, alternate between reading over your notes front to back, then back to front. Our brain usually remembers the first part, then tends to forget the last. So, if you have a list of things to remember, numbered from 1-10, the first time you will read the notes in sequence, the second time you will read the notes from 10 back to 1.

Don't postpone things. Don't postpone until tomorrow what you might do today, etc.... You'll probably end up doing it at an inconvenient time anyway. Waiting until the last minute seldom works! Budget your time for long-term assignments, so you don't have to panic at the last minute.

Divide and conquer: If you have a huge work load don't try to do it all at once. Divide it into bearable segments.

Last but not least: PUT DOWN THAT REMOTE!!!!
