SQ3R is an acronym that will help you remember a procedure that will guide you through a reading assignment. Each of the letters/numbers above stand for something.

S = Survey Look over the chapter title, headings, pictures, graphs, and questions at the end. Look at the whole picture to get an idea of what you are supposed to learn from the reading.

Q = Question Try to figure out what the chapter is about and what the teacher might want you to know. Come up with several major questions that could be answered while you read.

R1 = Read Think about answering the questions you came up with. Try to anticipate what comes next in the reading.

R2 = Review Apply what you are reading to what you all ready know.

R3 = Recite Decide what the author is trying to get at. What is important to remember? Did you answer all the questions you had? What don't you still understand? What don't you agree with?

What SQ3R does is help give you purpose in what you read. If you have an idea of what you need to know before you actually begin reading, you will pick up on important parts when you come to them. It will also help you remember them better.
